The Princess of Wales's Annual Festive Carol Concert Spotlights Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The large audience will enjoy a blend of carols, music and readings from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
A Theme of Kindness and Compassion
The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the concert.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Performance and Potential
Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the former royal to widen access to music lessons.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, recipient of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
