Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
