Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
