Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Labor Union Chief for ‘Trump’s Courtesan’ Statement

The Italian Prime Minister has strongly condemned the leader of the major Italian trade union after the official labeled her as “the courtesan” of President Donald Trump.

Background of the Disputed Comments

Maurizio Landini, who heads Italy’s CGIL labor organization, made the statement during a television appearance on Tuesday. This came just after global figures, including Meloni, attended a summit on Middle East peace hosted by Egypt.

The union leader asserted the Prime Minister of “failing to act” to promote peace in Gaza, remarking her participation was confined to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. Thankfully, the Italian citizens took to the street to uphold the prestige and integrity of Italy,” he stated.

Official Reaction

On her social media accounts on Thursday, Meloni stated that the union chief was clearly blinded by a mounting resentment (which I can understand)”. She proceeded to publish a meaning of the expression “courtesan”.

“I think it is widely understood the most common meaning given to this word, but, to assist anyone unfamiliar, I’m publishing the first definition located via a quick internet search,” the Prime Minister stated, providing a capture that read: “Promiscuous woman, heterosexual; euphemism, escort.”

Meloni further condemned her left-leaning critics, saying that for decades they had admonished us on gender equality” only to then attack a female leader by “labeling her a prostitute”.

Response from Landini

Replying to Meloni’s statement, Landini contended that there were “no gender-based slurs” directed at Meloni and that his use of “Trump’s subordinate”.

Through an official comment, he explained: “During a brief interview, which anyone can easily rewatch, to prevent misinterpretation or exploitation of the term, I immediately clarified what I meant – that the Prime Minister was trailing behind Trump, she was at Trump’s court, she served as Trump’s underling.”

Meloni’s Relations with Trump

The Italian leader has consistently maintained cordial connections with the American leader. In a public address in Egypt, the US President turned to Meloni – the only woman in attendance – and called her “beautiful”. “Across America, it would be the end of your political career,” he remarked. “However, I will risk it. May I comment that you are beautiful? Because you truly are beautiful.”

The US president afterwards lauded her as “a role model for everyone” in concerning the English edition of her publication, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which includes a foreword by his son.

Earlier Controversies

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister responded firmly after finding out that manipulated pictures of her and other prominent Italian women had been posted on a adult site, stating she felt revulsion, and offering “unity and backing to every woman who have been offended, insulted and violated”.
